Overwatch has been nonchalantly ignoring the most romantic commercial holiday in the world for the past six years, moving right from Lunar New Year into Pachimarchi or the lore-heavy Archives events. But this year, the developers are including a dating sim to add romance to the game.

The distant sound you hear is actually the enthusiastic screams of Overwatch players who have been pleading for Valentine’s Day content since since the game’s release. Fans have been demanding for the game’s resident archer, Hanzo, to receive a Cupid skin since 2017. Similar to this, the fanbase has consistently pleaded with Overwatch to capitalize on some of the most memorable relationships and exchanges in the game.

As part of the Ultimate Valentine’s Day celebration, Loverwatch, a text-based dating simulation set in the Overwatch 2 universe, will incorporate both of them when it debuts on February 13.

In this browser-based game, players will have the opportunity to attempt and court either Mercy or Genji. For the majority of game players, that idea already checks a lot of boxes, but it might not be acceptable to those who want Genji and Mercy to get together.

The dating sim is specifically identified as non-canon, so they can put the pitchforks away for the time being. For those who are not permanently online, this means the Loverwatch plot is amusing and has no significance in the Overwatch 2 narrative.

A bonus—or possibly a drawback, depending on how you look at it—is that Cupid, who the makers claim “suspectably resembles Hanzo,” will assist players. Hanzo, one of the game’s most flagrant grouchy characters, cannot possibly take this without lamenting over romance or the glaring lack of defensive armor on his Cupid suit.

The lore of Loverwatch won’t go over to Overwatch 2, but the prize will. Players will receive an exclusive in-game highlight intro if they can find the dating sim’s secret finale.

The first Ultimate Valentine’s Day event for Overwatch 2 is taking place from February 14 to February 28 and includes a dating sim. It will have support-based challenges as well as a Hanzo-centered four-vs-four mode. Along with other cosmetics, there will be a chance to win two Epic skins.

When Loverwatch debuts on February 13 and is available for play through February 28 it may be accessed at Loverwatch.gg. English, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, French, and German are all supported languages for the dating sim.
